PREFACE
ACCELERATE ACTION
Women are reshaping the future but the fight for equality is far from over
“We must amplify the conversation on gender equality and encourage others to join the movement”
From boardrooms to sports fields, women have consistently defied expectations and proven that the world is theirs to shape. Yet, as the World Economic Forum (WEF) highlights, full gender parity remains a distant dream.
At the current pace of progress, parity is projected to be achieved only in 2158 – that’s roughly five generations away!
This year’s International Women’s Day theme – ‘Accelerate Action’ – couldn’t be more timely. It is a call to address the systemic biases, social norms and power dynamics that hold women back.
True equality demands immediate and transformative change because equality can wait no longer. The glass ceiling remains but it’s being shattered piece by piece as women take on leadership roles in business, politics and other fields once deemed out of their reach.
In this special annual edition, we celebrate the achievements of these trailblazing leaders alongside those from essential sectors whose hard work and resilience build the very foundation of our nation.
We recognise visionary leaders shaping Sri Lanka’s future, and delve into the contributions from women whose focus on leadership and gender advocacy is making waves. Our sports feature shines a light the first woman to make her mark in the male dominated world of boxing, inspiring young girls to chase their dreams.
Also featured are women entrepreneurs who contribute to the local economy by creating jobs and empowering communities, and those driving innovation in the field of STEM. Their stories are testament to the fact that women don’t merely take part in change but are the architects of it.
From navigating the challenges of conflict zones and humanitarian crises in places like Gaza and Ukraine, to advocating for unity and stronger governance following landmark elections across the globe, women have demonstrated unmatched resilience this year.
However, there is still much work to be done.
For true equality, it isn’t enough to celebrate the achievements of women. We must dismantle the barriers that still exist and create an environment in which every woman can thrive without limitations.
As Executive Director of UN Women Sima Bahous has said, “we owe it to women and girls, and to everyone – to our children and theirs – to delay no further, and to build a future where women and girls everywhere thrive.”
The message is clear: the time for change is now.
We must amplify the conversation on gender equality and encourage others to join the movement – because the more voices there are, the quicker women can create the level playing field they deserve.
