In a context where digital transformation of the governmental institutions is set to elevate the nation to a new level, the Kandy Municipal Council (KMC) introduced a Quick Response Code (QR Code) recently. Through this in-house developed QR Code, KMC expects to effectively engage the public living within the Municipal limits and of those visiting the city daily to channel their general complaints /suggestions on real time basis.

At the request of the Kandy Municipal Council, Kandy Branch of People’s Leasing & Finance PLC joined hands towards the success of this initiative by sponsoring 15,000 QR Code stickers. These stickers are expected to display in food outlets and other public places in the Kandy area.

“People’s Leasing & Finance PLC is the flagship subsidiary of the state owned People’s Bank. We cater to the financial needs of mostly the Small and Medium Entrepreneurs. We also give back to society through Social Welfare programmes. As we got to know from KMU, this is the first time that a Sri Lankan provincial governance institution has introduced a QR Code to receive real time response from the public.  We are happy to partner with the KMC in this initiative, stated Mr. Sanjeewa Bandaranayake, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) / General Manager (GM) of People’s Leasing & Finance PLC.

“If experienced services are below par, the public can register their complaint conveniently by scanning the QR Code to any state institution in Kandy through KMC. This initiative is expected to encourage participation of the public in the city functioning allowing the KMC to quickly address issues towards the satisfaction of the public. Tens of thousands of people who will come to see the Sacred Exposition of the Tooth Relic of the Lord Buddha in April this year at the Temple of the Tooth are expected to benefit from this initiative. We are very thankful to PLC for the partnership extended.” said Ms. A. H. M. Indika Kumari Abeysingha, the Municipal Commissioner of KMC.

“Food hygiene issues, violation of road safety rules, street dangers, and issues in vehicle parks can be communicated to the Municipal Council via text or photo content through this channel. In return, complainer receives a reference number through which the subsequent action taken by the KMC can be inquired and tracked. These kinds of Public-Private Partnerships are vital for the advancement of Sustainable Development Goals.” added Dr. Pasan Parakum Jayasinghe, Chief Medical of Health Officer of KMC.
