Oceanpick premium Barramundi enters Europe

Oceanpick, Sri Lanka’s first and South Asia’s largest oceanic finfish farm, has reached another momentous milestone for its ocean-grown barramundi having successfully entered the European market through its strategic partnership with Kangamiut Seafood.

Kangamiut Seafood has a long-established and extensive European customer base and distribution network. This strategic partnership between Oceanpick and Kangamiut Seafood strengthens Oceanpick’s global brand extension and positions itself as a world-class aquaculture producer. Oceanpick will introduce its barramundi products to European consumers for the first time by leveraging Kangamiut Seafoods’ strong market penetration and supported by its experience in global partnerships, customer focus, reliable delivery and swift response.

Founded in Denmark in 1975, Kangamiut Seafood has a long and successful track record in the seafood business spanning over half a century, providing the world with quality frozen seafood. Kangamiut Seafood is the original cornerstone of the Kangamiut Group which is firmly positioned as a market leader in seafood export and distribution, supplying more than 100,000 tons of quality seafood every year to customers worldwide.

Despite current global challenges impacting all businesses worldwide, Oceanpick continues to demonstrate resilience during adverse times, taking on new challenges and bravely entering new markets in its quest to expand its customer base. Entry into the prestigious yet challenging European market is a significant achievement for Oceanpick which is already supplying its iconic barramundi to markets in Australia, the USA, the Maldives and the Middle East. Sri Lanka is now firmly positioned on the world aquaculture map, a much-needed boost to the island nation’s economy which took a downturn last year and is now on a steady path to recovery.

Barramundi has been coined as the ‘salmon of the tropics’ with its mellow flavours, smooth buttery taste and dining versatility. It compares very well against species such as the European seabass. The pristine waters of Trincomalee are the home to Oceanpick barramundi.

Recognizing sustainability as a core requirement, Oceanpick Farm and Hatchery are fully integrated

BAP-certified. Oceanpick’s land-based hatchery was recently renamed Alain Michel Hatchery after the French aquaculture veteran who was instrumental in setting it up several years ago.

Sharing his views on the company’s newest expansion efforts, Oceanpick Founder Irfan Thassim stated, “We are excited to open the newest chapter in our journey by taking our world-class Barramundi to the European market through our partnership with Kangamiut Seafood. It is widely known that European markets are tough to break into with their stringent standards and sophisticated consumers who demand the highest quality products.  This is a significant achievement for the company and it reinforces Sri Lanka’s position as a producer of world-class seafood that is right up there with the very best in the

world. The coming years are shaping to be exciting times for Oceanpick as we continue our journey with our world-class barramundi and build new, strong international partnerships as we make our way into new countries and regions.”
