SMARTER CHIPS Silicon Valley is witnessing a new kind of wealth boom but today’s millionaires are behaving very differently from those of previous generations. 

Fuelled by the rapid rise of AI, private tech enterprises and blockbuster startup valuations, many entrepreneurs and early employees are becoming extraordinarily wealthy long before their companies go public. 

This has transformed the role of financial advisers who are helping clients navigate fortunes that can appear almost overnight. Unlike tech billionaires of the past, many of today’s wealthy are less interested in lavish lifestyles; they are more focussed on protecting, growing and giving away their wealth. 

Advisers report that clients are asking sophisticated questions about tax strategies, philanthropy, family offices and long-term investments before they enjoy financial windfalls. Artificial intelligence is also changing the industry by allowing clients to access financial information instantly while expecting advisers to provide deeper and more personalised guidance.

As technology continues to create fortunes at unprecedented speed, success will depend not only on innovation but also the wisdom needed to preserve wealth, invest responsibly and build a lasting legacy for future generations. 

AUTONOMOUS RISK Across several American cities, autonomous vehicles have reportedly driven into active emergency scenes, blocked ambulances and fire engines, or frozen when faced with flashing lights, traffic cones, smoke or hand signals by police officers.

Unlike human drivers who can quickly interpret unusual situations, self-driving systems often struggle when events fall outside their programmed expectations. Instead of moving aside, some vehicles simply stop and force firefighters, paramedics and police officers to spend valuable time dealing with these cars instead of helping people who are in danger.

The growing number of incidents prompted federal regulators to intervene. Authorities have warned autonomous vehicle businesses that these failures pose an unacceptable risk to public safety and demanded practical solutions. Developers are now under pressure to improve how their vehicles recognise emergency situations and respond appropriately.

Before autonomous vehicles become a common sight on roads worldwide, they must prove they can cooperate with those who protect the public. In emergencies, hesitation can be the difference between life and death.

DIMMER SUN While it sounds like science fiction, scientists are investigating whether carefully dimming the sun could reduce the intensity of El Niño, which is one of the world’s most disruptive climate patterns.

The proposed method, which is known as ‘marine cloud brightening,’ involves spraying tiny seawater droplets into low-lying clouds above the Pacific Ocean. These droplets, which will make clouds more reflective, could send a greater proportion of sunlight back into space. 

In theory, this would cool the ocean’s surface and weaken the warm water conditions that fuel powerful El Niño events.

Researchers developed the idea after studying the massive Australian bush fires in 2019 and 2020. Smoke particles from the fires reflected sunlight and appeared to contribute to an unusually long La Niña period, which in turn provided scientists with a natural experiment. 

Computer models suggest that a similar effect, if it is created deliberately, could reduce the severity of future El Niño events, as well as the floods, droughts, heatwaves and storms they often trigger.

Despite its promise however, the idea remains highly controversial. Climate systems are extraordinarily complex and even small interventions could produce unexpected consequences or geopolitical tensions. For the time being, scientists see solar geoengineering not as a replacement for reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions but a possible emergency measure if global warming continues to accelerate.

STAYING COOL Record-breaking heatwaves are becoming more frequent and placing millions of people at risk the world over. And this is forcing governments, architects and homeowners around the globe to reconsider how they stay cool.

The obvious solution may seem to be installing more air conditioners but this creates a new dilemma because traditional cooling systems consume enormous amounts of electricity and often rely on refrigerants that contribute to global warming. 

Expanding their use without careful planning could place greater pressure on energy grids while worsening the problem they’re meant to address.

Therefore, scientists are developing next generation cooling technologies that are more energy efficient and environmentally-friendly. And cities are investing in greener urban spaces, reflective building materials, improved insulation and natural ventilation to reduce indoor temperatures before air conditioning becomes necessary.

The debate is no longer simply about keeping people comfortable but rather, involves designing a future where rising temperatures can be managed without accelerating climate change. Europe faces an important choice: follow the traditional path of widespread air conditioning or lead the world towards cleaner, more sustainable ways of staying cool.
