URBAN OASIS

A CURATED AND COMPACT URBAN LIVING EXPERIENCE

BY Archt. Pasindu Kithmina

Urban Oasis exemplifies an innovative approach to compact urban living. Situated on a seven perch plot in Thalawathugoda, Sri Lanka, this house is designed to achieve an impressive sense of spaciousness and greenery within a limited land area, redefining what it means to live in a densely populated urban environment.

The residence embodies a contemporary modern architectural style, showcasing materials, finishes and details carefully selected to elevate the quality of the space. The exterior facade is a refined composition of glass, timber and brick, which not only exudes elegance but also ensures the home blends seamlessly into its urban surroundings while maintaining privacy and balancing elegance with functionality.

Despite the compact seven perch plot, the buildable area was limited to just four perches (approximately 1,000 sq ft) due to legal reservations, presenting a significant challenge in meeting the spatial requirements of the house. This constraint was addressed by layering the design vertically across four storeys and minimising circulation spaces, with nearly non-existent corridors. Additionally, the spatial arrangement departs from the layout of conventional Sri Lankan house designs by elevating the main living area to the first floor.

This strategic move enhanced privacy by positioning it above street level while also maximising the use of available space. Furthermore, this living space is designed as a double height area, creating an expansive and airy ambiance that maximises natural light. Adjacent to the living area, a TV lounge extends the sense of openness, forming an ideal setting for family interactions and entertainment. Meanwhile, the dining area on the ground floor is located near the kitchen and flanked by gardens on two sides, offering an intimate dining experience amidst lush greenery.

The residence features four formal bedrooms and a unique semi-open bed space, each crafted to balance comfort and functionality. The master suite stands out with its private bathroom and walk-in closet, blending luxury with practicality. At the pinnacle of the house lies a rooftop bar, an idyllic retreat offering panoramic views and a peaceful escape from urban life, perfect for relaxation and social gatherings.

The staircase serves as the spine of the entire house, playing a crucial role in circulation and ventilation. Beyond connecting the floors, the staircase acts as a vertical ventilation shaft, employing the stack ventilation effect to naturally cool the home, reducing reliance on artificial cooling systems. Surrounding spaces are strategically arranged around this shaft, minimising circulation areas and optimising airflow for a comfortable indoor environment.

Nature is seamlessly integrated throughout the design, with planters and creepers incorporated at every level, bringing greenery into the interiors and enhancing air quality. The carefully landscaped three perch garden further enriches this connection to nature, providing serenity as well as adding a sense of spaciousness to the house.

Urban Oasis is a bold and visionary effort to redefine compact urban living. It seamlessly blends contemporary design with sustainable practices, creating a luxurious yet functional space. This home exemplifies how architecture can transform tight urban plots into luxurious, functional and harmonious living spaces.
