What hopes and expectations do you have for the year 2020? As a catholic, I welcome the New Year 2020 filled with the blessings of Lord Jesus Christ and Mother Mary for all of us! It is a great achievement if we could feed even a single person during the year who is crying for food (at least even once in the new year). During this new year, my hopes and expectations are that we live in peace with our brothers and sisters. Let there be justice, equality, peace of mind and honesty among each of us. Let us forgive and forget the wrong done to us and change our lives.
The year 2020 brings new hope for the Sri Lankan people, with a new leader taking over the reins. What is needed at this stage is to restore law and order so that the people of this land can live in peace and harmony. The biggest burden on the people is the high cost of living. So my wish is that the administrators will introduce relief measures in the new year.
The road network in the city is in a deplorable state with large potholes and trenches at every corner. This causes heavy traffic congestion during peak times. Therefore, I hope that the city roads will be developed. Further, an efficient rail and bus service will assist the thousands of commuters to reach their destination on time. I also hope that the ones in power will introduce an effective and efficient tax administration which will reduce the heavy burden and also help generate the required revenue for the country.
In terms of political transformation and a visionary strategy, considering the past trend since we gained independence, citizens of this country are unable to look forward for a positive change. As such, the economic climate is also volatile and brittle.
Hope and expectation can work both ways and in opposite directions. Unless we have a leader who can transform the country – as in some South Asian economies – it is pointless to build castles in the sky and be disappointed in the end.
Understandably, we only have control of what we can do for ourselves, and so the only option is to wish for the best in our efforts.
One cannot solely depend on the success of the economy of the country where he or she is based at. People should be able to develop themselves and make the best out of their efforts. After all, the 4IR and tech platform are a fine combination to position one’s best efforts for fruition.
At the same time, for a citizen in a developed country, it will be a stepping stone to success. However, we Sri Lankans don’t have this option.
My hope is that the next President, whoever it is, will make a difference and take this country forward because we have seen very little change in the last five years. Also, there will be general elections in the year 2020, which means that we will have to go through another phase of uncertainty which won’t be good for business.

Well, we can all depend on our own commitment and self-confidence and on top of all, one’s integrity and personal quality. What else?
Believe that you will agree with me on this.
