Sri Lanka assured of continuous assistance by World Bank

During a recent visit to Colombo, World Bank Vice President for the South Asia Region Hartwig Schafer reaffirmed the organisation’s commitment to help Sri Lanka get back on its feet following the deadly Easter Sunday terrorist attacks.

He also commended the country’s resilience in the aftermath of the tragic events.

Schafer stated that the World Bank would provide monetary assistance to reduce Sri Lanka’s budget deficit so that the country could continue its global borrowings on a firm economic footing.

Increased importance would also be given to uplift the island nation’s agriculture sector including operations in terms of irrigation, renewable energy, climate resilience and renovation of tanks in rural areas.

Meanwhile, President Maithripala Sirisena took the opportunity to express his gratitude to the World Bank for its longstanding support to Sri Lanka throughout the years.
