There are countless reasons for Riyadh being a top choice among corporate travellers – among them are a number of notable attractions, a conducive business environment and amenities tailored to the needs of discerning professionals.

Riyadh’s stature as the economic powerhouse of Saudi Arabia makes it an attractive destination for business travellers from around the globe. The city serves as the financial hub of the kingdom, and is home to multinational corporations, banks and investment firms.

Its vibrant business districts – such as the King Abdullah Financial District (KAFD) and Olaya – are abuzz with activities offering an environment for networking, deal making and collaboration.

Moreover, Riyadh’s strategic location within the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region positions it as a gateway to lucrative markets across the Middle East, North Africa and Asia.

The city’s modern transport infrastructure, including the King Khalid International Airport and an extensive network of highways, facilitates seamless connectivity both domestically and internationally, enabling corporate travellers to conduct business efficiently and explore new opportunities in neighbouring countries.

In addition to its economic prowess, Riyadh boasts a rich cultural heritage and vibrant social scene, offering visitors ample opportunities for leisure and recreation. The city is home to a wealth of cultural landmarks including the iconic Masmak Fortress, towering Kingdom Centre and majestic Murabba Palace.

The Masmak Fortress holds great significance in Saudi Arabia’s history. It’s a destination for corporate travellers interested in learning about the kingdom’s heritage and culture, as it offers insights into the region’s rich past, showcasing artefacts, weapons and exhibits related to the unification of Saudi Arabia.

As one of Riyadh’s most iconic landmarks, the Kingdom Centre offers visitors an opportunity to take in the breathtaking views of the city skyline from its observation deck. The centre features luxury shopping boutiques, gourmet restaurants and entertainment facilities, providing a perfect blend of business and leisure.

Riyadh’s hospitality sector has undergone significant expansion in recent years with the development of world-class hotels, conference centres and business facilities catering to the needs of corporate travellers.

Situated in the Diriyah district, Al-Bujairi Quarter offers a charming ambience with its traditional mud-brick buildings, narrow alleyways and souks. Travellers can explore local handicrafts, enjoy authentic Saudi cuisine at traditional restaurants or stroll along the picturesque Wadi Hanifah canal.

For business travellers who are interested in art, history and culture, the National Museum of Saudi Arabia is a ‘must-visit’ destination. TRAVEL TIPS

SMOOTH SAILING FOR JET-SETTERS

Nicola Jayasundera highlights indispensable hacks to ensure efficient travel

STAY LOYAL

Take advantage of airline and hotel loyalty programmes to earn rewards and perks that can enhance your travel experience. Sign up for frequent flyer programmes and hotel loyalty memberships to earn points on every trip, which can be redeemed for free flights, hotel stays, upgrades and access to airport lounges. Consolidating your travel with a select few brands can help you rack up rewards faster and streamline your travel experience. Additionally, consider using a travel rewards credit card to earn bonus points on travel related expenses such as flights, hotels and dining.

PACK LIGHT

The key to a smooth journey begins with packing efficiently. Invest in versatile clothing items that can be easily mixed and matched, reducing the number of outfits you need to take and avoiding bulky luggage. Opt for wrinkle resistant fabrics to keep your clothes looking fresh on arrival. Stick to essential items, and roll your clothes instead of folding them to save space and minimise wrinkles. Minimise stress and maximise efficiency by mastering the art of packing light. Additionally, make use of a compact lightweight carry-on bag to avoid checked baggage fees and the inconvenience of waiting at the carousel.

STAY CONNECTED

Stay productive and connected while travelling by investing in portable tech solutions. Carry a portable charger or power bank to keep your devices charged during long flights or layovers. Consider purchasing a portable WiFi hotspot or subscribing to a mobile data plan with international coverage to stay connected to the internet wherever your travels take you. And download offline maps and translation apps to navigate unfamiliar destinations without relying on internet connections.

STAY ORGANISED

Make use of travel apps and digital tools to stay organised during your trip. Utilise apps like TripIt to keep all your itinerary details in one place – including flight information, hotel reservations and meeting schedules. Consider scanning important documents such as your passport and driver’s licence, and storing them securely in a cloud-based app like Dropbox or Google Drive for easy access in case of emergency. Keep track of receipts and expenses in real time using mobile apps or digital wallets to avoid the headache of sorting through a mountain of paperwork on your return. Opt for electronic receipts whenever possible to simplify the process even more.

ALIGN TIME ZONES

Combat jet lag by adjusting your sleep schedule a few days before your trip to align with your destination’s time zone. On arrival, expose yourself to natural light during daylight hours to help regulate your body’s internal clock. If you’re scheduled on a long haul flight across multiple time zones, plan your sleep strategically. Consider adjusting your sleep schedule during the flight to align with the time zone of your destination – even if this means staying awake longer or taking short naps at specific intervals.

AIRPORT NAVIGATION

Before your trip, familiarise yourself with the layout of the airports you’ll be passing through. Most airports have online maps, which you can study to locate terminals, gates, lounges and amenities. Take advantage of online check-in services offered by airlines to save time at the airport. This enables you to select seats, print boarding passes and sometimes even drop off baggage without waiting in long lines. Opt for TSA PreCheck or Global Entry where possible to take advantage of dedicated security lanes that offer expedited screening. These programmes allow you to keep your shoes, belts and light jackets on, and leave laptops and liquids in your bag, saving valuable time.

REMOTE WORK

INTRICACIES OF DIGITAL NOMADISM

Tamara Rebeira examines the pros and cons of combining remote work and travel

In 2020, the world witnessed an unprecedented surge in remote work as the COVID-19 pandemic forced businesses to adapt to a new way of working. Despite the challenges, organisations persevered, keeping operations running even as the world seemed to come to a standstill.

Fast forward four years, and remote work remains a cornerstone in many business houses.

Many have embraced the flexibility of remote work, combining business with leisure as they engage in travel. Thanks to the internet accessibility, people are now able to seamlessly integrate work into their journeys, be it through remote meetings or enjoying the sights while staying connected.

The trend of combining remote work with travel – often referred to as ‘digital nomadism’ or ‘remote working while travelling’ – has gained traction among professionals seeking to blend work with exploration and adventure.

Remote work while travelling offers professionals the freedom to escape the confines of traditional office environments and explore new destinations while meeting their professional responsibilities.

Digital nomads can work from virtually anywhere in the world, whether it’s a bustling cafe, beach side resort or cosy mountain cabin. Unlike traditional office based roles that adhere to strict schedules and routines, remote workers have the flexibility to set their own hours, choose their work environment, and tailor workflows to suit individual preferences and needs.

This flexibility enables remote workers to strike a balance between work and leisure, enabling them to explore new destinations, pursue personal interests and immerse themselves in local cultures while meeting their professional obligations.

Another dynamic of remote work while travelling is the need for effective time management and self-discipline. While the freedom to work from anywhere is liberating, it requires remote workers to be proactive and self-motivated in managing time – often across different time zones – and priorities.

Balancing work commitments with travel experiences, sightseeing excursions and social activities calls for careful planning, organisation and the ability to prioritise tasks effectively, to ensure productivity and meet deadlines.

Communication and connectivity are also essential dynamics of remote work while travelling. Maintaining clear and consistent communication with colleagues, clients and collaborators despite being geographically dispersed is crucial for remote workers to stay connected and informed.

Logistical challenges such as managing time zones, navigating visa requirements and ensuring reliable internet connectivity can at times pose obstacles for remote workers while travelling.

And adapting to new environments, cultural norms and local customs requires flexibility, patience and a willingness to navigate unfamiliar situations.

Despite the challenges, remote work while travelling offers unparalleled opportunities for personal growth, professional development and cultural enrichment. By embracing flexibility, self-discipline, effective communication and adaptability, remote workers can unlock the potential of this dynamic lifestyle, blending work with travel.

Findings from the 2024 Spring Global Rescue Traveler Sentiment and Safety Survey reveal that 59 percent of employees are more encouraged to travel because of their remote or hybrid work arrangements.

Global Rescue CEO Dan Richards says: “Vacations used to be all about a complete escape from work but now you can check emails from a hammock in the Maldives, take a break from a video conference to surf the incoming tide in Rincon or finish the workday in Sweden and have plenty of time to view the northern lights.”

BLEISURE Travel

In the evolving landscape of contemporary travel, the concepts of ‘bleisure’ (business and leisure) travel and ‘workation’ (work-vacation) have emerged as transformative ways for travellers to seamlessly intertwine their work responsibilities with leisurely exploration.
