Q: As a pioneer in beauty and hairdressing in Sri Lanka, how has Christell Luxury Wellness shaped the culture of cosmetology in the country?

Prof. Ramani Arsecularatne (RA): Two to three decades ago, I was part of Sri Lanka’s thriving hairdressing and beauty sector but I felt drawn to explore new avenues. Observing the global emergence of cosmetology, I pursued advanced education in the US.

Upon my return, I launched the Ramani Arsecularatne International Academy of Cosmetology, aiming to lift Sri Lanka’s cosmetology scene. Recognising the surge in demand for cosmetic dermatology, I urged my daughter to pursue her further studies in aesthetic medicine and collaborated with a medical colleague to found Christell Luxury Wellness in around 2013 or 2014.

Dr. Shanika Arsecularatne (SA): We opened the first specialised cosmetic clinic in Sri Lanka, uniquely merging aesthetic medicine and cosmetology under medical supervision. While separate dermatology practices and beauty salons existed, none offered the comprehensive services we provided.

Initially inheriting clients from my mother’s reputable portfolio, we saw scepticism towards routines such as botox and injectables due to societal taboos. As attitudes changed however, demand skyrocketed, leading to the rapid expansion of the cosmetic clinic business nationwide.

Back then – and as the youngest qualified doctor in Sri Lanka to graduate from The American Academy of Aesthetic Medicine – I continued to boost my expertise with postgraduate diplomas in dermatology from Cardiff University and am now pursuing a master’s degree in Manchester to add to this dynamic field.

Q: Can you expand on some of the cutting-edge technologies and innovations introduced to the field of cosmetology in Sri Lanka?

RA: Initially, I faced limitations as a nonmedical professional. However, I pursued advanced diplomas beyond our standard curriculum and explored new techniques in cosmetology.

I introduced laser technology to Sri Lanka 20 years ago, initiating its use in the country. Continuously enhancing my skills through international courses, I introduced novel procedures such as chemical and mechanical exfoliation and dermabrasion.

I aimed to provide nonsurgical anti-ageing solutions, gradually expanding our offerings to many new technologies and transforming the cosmetic treatment landscape in Sri Lanka.

SA: In this fast evolving field, staying current is crucial. Drawing from my mother’s practice and supported by my father, I’ve adopted a philosophy of continuous learning and skills enhancement.

Adopting the latest tools and technology is integral to our approach, ensuring we stay ahead in this dynamic sector.

Q: How has Sri Lanka’s economic crisis impacted the country’s journey towards gender equity?

SA: Female engagement is crucial for a country’s economic progress. Whether through traditional employment, entrepreneurship or micro-scale businesses, women’s contributions are crucial.

This isn’t simply a matter of acknowledging International Women’s Day; it’s about recognising the ongoing importance of female contributions worldwide.

Despite persistent gender inequality and challenges such as unfair wages, empowering women is vital. Mutual support between genders – as seen in personal experiences such as my father encouraging my mother’s business ventures and facilitating my education – fosters an environment where everyone can thrive.

In my experience, my father played a pivotal role in encouraging and helping my educational and entrepreneurial mindset.

Q: What is your vision for businesswomen in Sri Lanka in 2024 and beyond?

RA: Considering our economic situation, there’s always a sense of needing to reassess our actions. Despite challenges, we must continue moving forward in our lives. Whether it’s navigating crises or pursuing development, these challenges are inevitable. We can’t simply avoid them; instead, we must face them head-on.

SA: Entrepreneurship, in medicine or any other field, involves helping local businesses and facing inevitable challenges. Despite comparisons with opportunities abroad, Sri Lanka offers unique advantages and success stories of career driven women thriving in tough environments, emphasising the potential for business growth and personal achievement in the country.
