Sri Lankan marine aquaculture research to gain quality uplift

The foundation stone was laid for a ‘Marine Aquaculture Research Centre,’ constructed at a cost of Rs. 50 million, within the premises of the National Aquatic Resources Research and Development Agency (NARA).

Among other invitees, the event was attended by State Minister of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development Dilip Wedaarachchi, NARA Chairman E. A. S. K. Edirisinghe and Managing Director W. N. M. Soysa who participated in laying the foundation stone.

According to NARA, the new research centre would help overcome a shortage of research facilities by enabling the breeding of ornamental fish, sea leeches and shrimp, seaweed cultivation and relevant research studies.

“The ornamental fish industry contributes about three percent to the national economy. But so far, only fish caught from the sea have been exported. With the establishment of the new research centre, we will be able to breed and export marine ornamental fish. This is a major improvement for our export sector,” Wedaarachchi noted, while speaking at the ceremony.

He emphasised the need for a programme to accurately educate fisher communities and the general public on NARA’s research findings: “The right understanding among the public on innovation can accelerate the growth of this industry. Also, the services provided by the institute will be invaluable to the students… in the universities.”

The minister reminded those who had gathered about the harmful effects of marine pollution on the population of fish in the country’s water bodies, and conveyed his appreciation for the commitment and contribution made by NARA towards protecting the industry through educative research studies.
