Empowering Women, Rebuilding Sri Lanka: A Call for Private Sector Action

A New Era of Opportunities

Sri Lanka, a nation with a rich history and unwavering resilience, stands at a pivotal moment in its journey towards economic recovery and social progress. The recent appointment of President, Honorable Anura Kumara Dissanayake marks a new era, one that would embark a whole new direction for sustainable development.

However, as a democratic socialist republic, Sri Lanka’s citizens too share a collective responsibility to work together towards a progressive future. In the aftermath of the country’s most severe economic crisis, it is imperative to harness the full potential of its people with faith, especially women who currently constitute the majority of Sri Lanka’s population, by increasing labor productivity and expanding the pool of skilled workers to drive sustainable socio-economic development in all sectors as a sound economic strategy, not forgetting Sri Lanka is a country where even higher education is freely available.

The appointment of Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya, the 3rd female to hold this position in Sri Lankan history, is a significant step forward in recognizing and empowering women in leadership positions. It sends a powerful message that Sri Lanka values gender equality and inclusive governance.

Unleashing Women’s Potential

Women have long been the backbone of Sri Lanka’s economy, often working tirelessly in the shadows. From the bustling garment factories to the global care industry as domestics, their contributions have been invaluable to the nation’s foreign exchange earnings. However, to fully unlock their potential in this new age, we must create an environment that supports their growth and empowers them to reach new heights.

Why Women’s Empowerment Matters

  • Economic Growth: Women’s participation in the workforce drives economic growth, innovation, and increased productivity.
  • Social Progress: Empowering women leads to improved health, education, and reduced poverty rates.
  • Resilient Communities: Women play a crucial role in building resilient communities, particularly during crises.

The Role of the Private Sector

The private sector has a crucial role to play in this transformative journey. By embracing gender equality and diversity at work, businesses can not only enhance their reputation but also drive innovation and growth by;

  • Promoting gender equality at work: Implementing policies that ensure equal pay, opportunities for advancement, and a harassment-free workplace
  • Investing in women-led businesses: Providing financial support, mentorship, and training to empower women entrepreneurs.
  • Encouraging flexible work arrangements: Accommodating the needs of working mothers and caregivers with remote or flexible work options.
  • Raising awareness: Educating employees and stakeholders about the importance of gender diversity and inclusion in the corporate sector leading by example

A Shared Vision

By working together, the government, the private sector, and civil society can create a more equitable and prosperous Sri Lanka. Let’s empower women and rebuild a more sustainable future for generations to come.
