SRI LANKA INSURANCE GENERAL REAFFIRMS COMMITMENT TO POSITIVE IMPACT WITH INDEPENDENT GREENHOUSE GAS VERIFICATION

Sri Lanka Insurance Corporation General Ltd (SLICGL) has received an official Greenhouse Gas Verification Opinion from the Sri Lanka Climate Fund (Pvt) Ltd, operating under the Ministry of Environment, confirming the company’s greenhouse gas statement complies with ISO 14064-1:2018 and has been verified in accordance with ISO 14064-3:2019.

The recognition reflects SLICGL’s continuing commitment to making a positive impact on the environment, the economy, and the communities it serves, embedding sustainability into how the company measures and reports its own footprint. SLICGL has achieved the verification previously and this year’s opinion reaffirms standards has been maintained.

The verification assessed SLICGL’s operations throughout the head office and branch network, examining energy consumption, vehicle use, and other business activities to identify major sources of emissions and target areas for reduction and efficiency improvement.

The assessment was carried out by Sri Lanka Climate Fund (Pvt) Ltd as an independent, accredited third party, ensuring the results are impartial and accurate. For SLICGL, treating this measurement and reporting process as an ongoing responsibility, rather than a one-time exercise, is what the company considers central to its continuing commitment.

As Sri Lanka’s premier state-owned general insurer and the country’s leading motor insurer by market share, SLICGL continues to align operations with internationally recognised standards for environmental management, transparency, and accountability.

The verification, covering the assessment period from 1 January to 31 December 2025, examined SLICGL’s operationally controlled business activities and confirmed total emissions of 3,454.59 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent, comprising 1,626.10 tonnes of direct (Scope 1) emissions and 1,828.48 tonnes of indirect emissions, made up of 1,342.82 tonnes from electricity use (Scope 2) and 485.66 tonnes from other indirect sources (Scope 3).

The verification opinion, accredited by the Sri Lanka Accreditation Board and recognised under the International Accreditation Forum’s multilateral arrangement, remains valid until 31 March 2027.
