Biodiversity Means Business:
A Decade of Impact,
A Future of Action
“At Hirdaramani, sustainability is not a separate initiative – it’s embedded into the way we operate”

Sustainability is not an add-on but a deeply ingrained philosophy for the Hirdaramani Group. The company’s commitment to environmental stewardship led it to partner with Biodiversity Sri Lanka (BSL), a decision that has since amplified its impact on biodiversity conservation and reinforced its Future First sustainability road map.
“Our decision to join BSL was driven by our deep-rooted commitment to environmental stewardship and a recognition that preserving biodiversity is essential to long-term business sustainability. At Hirdaramani, sustainability is not a separate initiative – it’s embedded into the way we operate. Partnering with BSL aligned perfectly with our environmental goals,” explains Director Siddharth Hirdaramani.
Through BSL, Hirdaramani Group has found a powerful platform to collaborate with like-minded organisations, subject matter experts and key government institutions. He notes: “We have gained insights and access to localised expertise that has elevated the quality and impact of our biodiversity efforts, reinforcing our role as a responsible and future ready manufacturer.”
INNOVATIVE CONSERVATION Hirdaramani’s biodiversity work is guided by a strategic, science driven framework. Its Future First road map integrates environmental, social and corporate governance (ESG) priorities with a focus on two key pillars: restoring biodiversity on the lands where the company operates, and partnering with national and global stakeholders to scale impact.
“To date, we have established three dedicated biodiversity parks across Sri Lanka, each representing a distinct ecosystem: a wetland reserve in Ja-Ela, a forest patch in Agalawatte and a dry zone landscape in Mullaitivu. These sites are backed by comprehensive baseline biodiversity assessments and ongoing ecological monitoring, allowing us to measure and manage impact in real time,” Hirdaramani adds.
What makes the group’s approach unique is that biodiversity conservation is integrated into its core business strategy rather than being treated as corporate social responsibility.
He emphasises: “By combining on-site conservation with strategic collaboration, we are able to go beyond compliance and drive meaningful environmental change that is aligned with both local ecosystems and global frameworks.”

MEASURABLE RESULTS The company’s biodiversity initiatives have already yielded significant outcomes. “Ecologically, we have rehabilitated degraded land, and reintroduced native flora and fauna in all three biodiversity park locations,” Hirdaramani reveals. These parks have evolved into living laboratories, supporting a growing number of species and revitalising vital ecosystems.
From a business perspective, the group’s conservation efforts have strengthened relationships with stakeholders across the board. He affirms: “We have built stronger partnerships with local communities, environmental regulators and national agencies while positioning the organisation as a brand that walks the talk on sustainability.”
While cost savings were not the primary goal, Hirdaramani acknowledges that these investments help the company future proof against environmental risks and regulations, contributing to long-term operational excellence.
SCALING IMPACT As Hirdaramani looks to the future, it plans to scale and deepen the impact of its biodiversity initiatives. “This includes expanding biodiversity parks, strengthening monitoring tools for data driven insights and exploring nature based solutions that link biodiversity with climate adaptation,” its director notes.
The company is also working to embed biodiversity targets more deeply across all its manufacturing operations, both locally and internationally.
These priorities tie closely with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 13 (Climate Action) and SDG 15 (Life on Land). For Hirdaramani, the message to other corporates is clear: “Recognising nature as an integral stakeholder has reshaped how we view long-term value and resilience. Biodiversity is no longer merely a cause – it’s a consideration that influences everything from community relationships to operational continuity.”
He calls for collective action: “Investing in nature creates ripple effects: it nurtures goodwill; strengthens regulatory readiness; enhances brand trust; and most importantly, inspires teams with a sense of shared purpose. At Hirdaramani, we see this as an evolving journey – one that calls on all of us to work collectively towards a future where business and biodiversity can thrive together.”
