Sri Lanka rail services to be boosted by new fleet: ministry

Sri Lanka will receive a total of eight new trains over the course of the coming months, which are set to boost rail services especially in the hill country, according to the Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation.

Furthermore, the ministry says six of the power sets hail from China while two are from India. The first unit, a Chinese S14, was received in August and each is said to cost an estimated US$ 10.3 million.

This state-of-the-art S14 unit has two engines and comprises three compartments: two air-conditioned, two for second class, three for third class and one for dining.

Sri Lanka Railways states that a new train would commence services from Kandy to Colombo Fort at 4.30 a.m. and will depart to Kandy from the Fort station at 5.20 p.m. each day.
