LEADING LADIES

Q: What is the main challenge facing women who aspire to reach the top in the corporate world?

“Sri Lanka produced the first woman prime minister and a woman president so we surely have a track record of female leadership. Women contribute disproportionately to our economy by repatriating their income from overseas employment, or toiling on the slopes of tea plantations or production floors of apparel factories. We all know the reasons why women are underrepresented in formal business or traditional roles, corporate conventions and expectations in the home for them to bear the bulk of domestic chores. Perhaps what’s needed is for women to assert themselves both at home and in the workplace, and ensure that these roles are equated – and for corporates to realise that such a path is truly progressive.
