Sri Lanka tourism on the road to recovery: official

Tourist arrivals to Sri Lanka have gradually started to pick up following the Easter Sunday attacks that took place in April.

This is according to Managing Director of the Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau Charmarie Maelge, who described Sri Lanka as being in recovery mode and stated that there is increased interest among travellers especially those who prefer to visit crowd free destinations.

“There are certain amounts of new bookings at hotels in Arugam Bay because some travellers want that crowd free experience,” she said.

Maelge expressed confidence that tourist numbers would increase and that the Sri Lankan tourism industry would reach its targets in due course.

She revealed that the country would go ahead with its annual plan, not altering any of the previously planned activities and events.

Additionally, several new campaigns have come into place to revive the tourism industry with Sri Lanka finding itself in an enabling environment, according to Maelge, which is deemed to be crucial to the recovery process.
