Sri Lanka aims to become region’s next technology hub

The Sri Lanka Association of Software and Service Companies (SLASSCOM) launched AWS Educate, an initiative to position Sri Lanka as a hub for data science and AI skills, in collaboration with Amazon Web Services (AWS).

The SLASSCOM and AWS partnership is expected to provide training on cloud computing and AI skills for 50,000 engineering and non-engineering students over the next two years through the global AWS Educate programme.

Students who join AWS Educate can avail themselves of a host of benefits including access to 12 Cloud Career Pathways covering topics such as machine learning, cybersecurity and software development; AWS promotional credits to use extended services and tools; opportunities to earn various competencies such as gaming, Alexa skills and IoT; and the ability to apply for internships offered at Amazon and other companies in the AWS partner network.

Commenting on the impact of the new project, President for Amazon Internet Services Public Sector for India and South Asia Rahul Sharma said: “Students and entrepreneurs in Sri Lanka need to be at the forefront of technologies that are changing the way IT and business impact is delivered, and their enablement is a critical cornerstone to economic development. Cloud literacy programmes using AWS Educate enable Sri Lankan students to build the foundation skills they require and we are pleased to work with SLASSCOM to support this need.”
