This award-winning 100-year-old dwelling is a British colonial style house in Mirissa. Siri Wedamadura Villa, which was originally the residence of a village doctor, has been transformed into a holiday villa that has retained its charm and character. The villa consists of two levels that accommodate four bedrooms with en suite bathrooms, as well as living, dining and kitchen areas, and separate staff quarters. An atrium with a skylight illuminates the central living space and transforms it from the dark place it once was into a cosy and comfortable abode. A renovated double height roof at the rear in effect converts the villa into an alfresco style dining veranda alongside a natural cliff that’s covered in foliage. The interior decor reflects a fusion of ancient and modern designs, which accentuate the age and charm of this villa. A 20 metre long swimming pool and pavilion amid a beautifully landscaped garden enhance the surroundings. Renovating this villa to suit the contemporary era called for sensitivity to the original building’s identity; this was done with care so that the character and soul of the house were preserved, and not compromised in the transformation process.
