New intercity train service inaugurated: Sri Lanka Railways 

The country’s first intercity train between Colombo Fort and Badulla – Denuwara Menike – commenced service on the main line recently. It was initiated by Sri Lanka Railways (SLR) in response to passenger demand for an upcountry service.

Denuwara Menike is a specially designed unit to travel in the hill country. Moreover, it is a newly imported state-of-the-art Chinese Class S14 Diesel Electric Multiple Unit (DEMU) featuring two air-conditioned first class compartments, two second class compartments, three third class compartments and a dining compartment.

Furthermore, the train contains modern amenities such as a public address system in all carriages, TV screens, mobile phone charging outlets in first class compartments and headset facilities for passenger seats.

The train is scheduled to operate every other day on each direction, and will stop at Colombo Fort, Polgahawela, Peradeniya Junction, Gampola, Nawalapitiya, Hatton, Talawakelle, Nanu Oya, Haputale, Diyatalawa, Bandarawela, Ella and Badulla.
