The government is expected to invest over US$ 300 million to reclaim 85 hectares of land for a new beachfront from Kollupitiya to Dehiwela, according to Ministry of Megapolis and Western Development Secretary Nihal Rupasinghe.

In addition to an environmental impact assessment study that is currently underway, the National Aquatic Resources Research and Development Agency is to prepare a feasibility report prior to commencement of the project.

The land is to be reclaimed through landfill and developed as a public-private partnership. A world-class aquarium, seaplane operation unit, water sports, wreck diving and safe sea bathing area are expected to be some of the beach’s attractions.
