Overall computer literacy in Sri Lanka was reported to be 28.6 percent in 2017, according to the Department of Census and Statistics (DCS). The urban sector displayed the highest computer literacy rate of 40.5 percent, followed by the rural and estate sectors with 27.1 percent and 9.1 percent respectively.

During the survey period, the Western Province reported the highest availability of computers in households (35.2%) and computer literacy rate (38.8%). Meanwhile, the Uva Province reported the lowest availability of computers in households (11%) and the Eastern Province reported the lowest computer literacy rate (14.7%).
