The Government has given in to private bus operators’ demands that buses be permitted to ply the newly opened Southern Expressway. How do you view this decision? What are its implications for other motorists?

It’s good but only one operator to be allowed with strict conditions, many owners will spoil the cause. Private bus owners association said that they can do the run for 300 but I doubt meeting with good maintenance of quality buses with this fee. They may just drag the standards of bus service with a lower fare with which they cannot meet with running and finance cost.
It should be regulated and standards to be maintained. Otherwise you will not meet with the objectives of the highway with substandard buses with rebuilt tires and smoky engines.
Private bus operators will promise a lower fare to get the licence to operate on the highway, but after three months they will go on strike and say that they need to increase the fare!! like they always do…!!! I hope the Government will not fall into this trap. The Government should improve the standards of the buses that they are operating currently and possibly see if there is a demand and then increase the frequency and maintain high standards so that even the tourist will make use of this service.
Buses on the Expressway is a necessary evil, as it will permit more people to experience the convenience of travel in the fast lane. However, if too many are allowed access, they will start to race (as they already do) and cause more havoc than a service.
Busses with opened doors + run-down engines + bad clutch plates + unstable body + no seat belts are a recipe for disaster. Another smart move by a Sri Lankan politician. Seriously where do you get such ideas..??? No wonder the country is going down the hill.
